1.  Are our puppies good with children?

We pride ourselves on our puppy rearing.  All of our puppies are raised in our kitchen/dining room and exposed to the daily activities of a family of 7.  My children are all very involved in the puppy rearing and spend countless hours in the puppy pen holding and playing with puppies!  Many Dachshunds are fearful of children, but the feedback we have received from our past puppy buyers is that the pups that leave here are very comfortable around children and sometimes seek them out when given the opportunity.

2.  When can I choose my puppy?

Puppies are in limited supply.  Due to the many inquiries we receive in regards to puppies, we never promise puppies until they are here and thriving.  As families present themselves to us for consideration we compile a "list" of potential homes.  Our number one concern is that families are 100% dedicated to the commitment of having a Dachshund.  Our families are chosen based on each one individually and then we do our best to match up the right puppy to ensure a happy pairing.  Puppies are never sold on a first come first serve basis, and unfortunately there won't always be puppies available to everyone who is interested.  It is always encouraged to spend a little time telling us about yourself and your interests and how a Dachshund would fit in with your lifestyle.  We love to talk doxies, so don't be shy!

3.  Do we require a deposit?

Once a pairing has been made between a puppy and a family then we do require a non-refundable deposit of $150.00.  In the event the puppy become unavailable by us, the deposit will be refunded or applied to another puppy.  Payment in full is due by the time the puppy is picked up.  Checks are accepted if received at least 10 days in advance of pick up date.

4.  How much do our puppies cost?

We ask $600.00 for each of our puppies.  We understand that there are many loving families out there that can and will offer a loving home to our puppies, so we try to keep the initial cost affordable.  There are numerous additional costs that will be required when bringing home a new puppy and we want each puppy to be given the best care possible, so we hope the reasonable fee we ask will help make the other costs more manageable.

5.  What medical concerns are associated with Dachshunds?

Things to consider when adding a Dachshund to your life is the various medical conditions associated with the breed.  We are lucky to have only a few breed specific concerns, but unfortunately the number one issue can be a life threatening one.

#1 Due to their long length and unusual short legs, they can be prone to IVDD (Intervertebral Disk Disease).  Thankfully, none of my dogs have shown any signs of this, but there is always that possibility.  Jumping on and off furniture should be discouraged.  Follow this link to learn more about the disease http://users.cyberport.net/~milnerwm/fastfacts.html

#2  PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) is common in the breed.  I have my dogs CERF tested to ensure that they have a "normal" status.  Follow this link to learn more about PRA http://www.caninegeneticdiseases.net/PRA/basicPRA.htm

#3 Weight-gain is common in Dachshunds and can contribute to various health factors.  Try to keep your dog on a regulated amount of a good quality diet, and make sure there is some physical activity on a daily basis.  The nice thing about Dachshunds is that they are not a breed that needs a lot of exercise for their mental state, but they do need some for their physical state.  They are happy to be fat couch potatoes, but for their own good it should be limited.

6.  Do our puppies get their first shots before going home with the new owners?

We take our puppies to the vet around 7 weeks of age for an exam and first distemper vaccine.  At that time they are also tested for intestinal parasites, including giardia.  A state of NH health certificate is issued at this visit.  Each puppy is dewormed starting at 2 weeks of age and is strategically dewormed until leaving here.  Once going home with their new families they will require 2 additional distemper vaccines to ensure proper immunity.  Please follow the guidelines of your own veterinarian.

7.  Are the puppies registered with AKC?

All of our adults are registered with the AKC (American Kennel Club).  Each litter is registered with the AKC as well.  However, all of our puppies are sold on a strict spay/neuter contract and AKC paperwork will not be forwarded until proof of spay/neuter is provided.  Each puppy is sold with Limited Registration.  Show homes for our puppies will be considered on an individual basis, but as a rule we only sell our puppies to pet homes.

8.  Do we offer support after the puppy goes to his/her new home?

Support is always offered once a puppy leaves here!  All families are welcome to contact me with ANY questions or concerns they may have.  I will do my best to answer any questions I can, or offer suggestions etc.  Working for the vet also affords me easy access to a veterinarian to ask questions of etc.  So I encourage families to come to me with any concerns they may have.  I also encourage families to keep me somewhat in the loop with the puppy's growing up...kind of like that "distant relative" that gets a Christmas Card once a year.  I just like to know that my puppies are happy and that the families that adopt them are happy too!

9.  What kind of guarantee comes with each puppy?

We offer a 1 year genetic health guarantee for each puppy.  This means that we take full responsibility for their genetic health.  IF there is a situation where a life threatening genetic defect with a puppy, and a licensed veterinarian offers full documentation of such, then either a refund of money or a replacement puppy will be offered.  It is extremely important to us that our puppies are healthy, so we stand behind them 100%.

Also, we have a clause in our contract that states that if a puppy can no longer be kept by a family, due to unforeseen circumstances, then it is required that the puppy be returned to us.  We never want to see one of our puppies in a shelter or rescue league.  Our pups are always welcome back here at any time, for any reason.  No refunds will be made in these situations.

10.  Can we visit before the pups are born or shortly after?

We are always happy to meet with families!  Our dogs are very social and enjoy company.  Our home is open to families that may be considering a Dachshund and are look for the right breeder.  We just ask that arrangements be made ahead of time for visits and that IF we have pups at the time it be understood that timing may be dependent on the age of the pups.  We invite visitors after our pups are about 4 weeks old to ensure that our Mom's are comfortable with strangers visiting their pups.  Once families are chosen for puppies, then we do keep weekly updates available online and also personal emails to families so they can see their puppy growing and hear milestones that are being reached.  It's very important to us that our families be very involved from as early as possible.
